- Description
Progress 4GL Software Developers x 2, for a full ERP solution. Salaries £35k to £50k, depending on your experience level plus health care and benefits. In the future, you need to be in reasonable commuting distance of north Milton Keynes (very close to the M1 motorway) but for now, will be home based a lot of the time. Interviews can be conducted by telephone and Skype or video call.
The roles are to work for a very successful retail design & distribution company with a number of nationwide stores and a strong global multi-channel and ecommerce online business. They have 2 legacy ERP solutions that were designed in Progress 4GL, and these systems are well established and they work brilliantly. So these jobs have some elements of support work, (although that is limited) plus new development for enhanced functionality to the ERP system. They have a small, busy IT department and you will report to the IT Director.
You need to be an experienced Progress Developer and as they are looking for two people, it could be one senior level and one more junior, or two at the same level. You must have the ability to program using Progress 4GL tools and environment, and be confident and personable enough to talk to users to understand their needs.
Because they do a huge amount of web sales through their own website, there is a need to work with, and collaborate with their 2 .Net Software Developers.
Most importantly this job will cover the whole development lifecycle including:
Business analysis
Requirements
Specification
Progress OpenEdge Software Development
Software Testing
Maintenance and bugs
So you will need to enjoy talking to different users, understanding the requirements of the business and you will enjoying learning from the different departments.
In the past the developers have had an opportunity to join in all sorts of other things from time to time, "Pick and Pack" in the warehouse, work in the retail stores, and man the phones in the contact centre. So there is a huge amount of variety, interest and challenge in this role.
Over the next 2 years, the IT Director will be looking at bringing in a new ERP solution and he would expect the system to be implemented over the following 5 years. So there will be lots of new projects and a chance to learn new ERP systems and more development languages, but the amount of Progress code they have already, means there will still be Progress work for many years to come.
It would suit experienced Progress Software Developers who like engaging with people, working in a supportive and close knit team, and who are looking for a long term career with a really solid end user company that look after their staff very well.
You need to be able to commute to Milton Keynes on a regular basis in the long term, but at the moment will be doing a lot of home based work.
